How To Choose The Perfect Family Photo Outfit

Choosing the right attire is an important aspect of planning your family portrait session. Your clothing can enhance the overall look and feel of your portraits and show the personalities of each individual family member! Here are some tips for choosing the perfect family photo outfit.

1. Coordinate, don’t match

When choosing outfits for a family photo, it’s best to coordinate colours and styles, rather than trying to match everyone’s outfits precisely. Pick a colour scheme and stay within that palette. For example, you could wear neutral shades for a beachy portrait session, or choose jewel tones if you’re shooting at a green, leafy park.

2. Dress for the occasion

Consider the location and overall theme of the photo session when selecting outfits. For example, if the photo session is at a beach, light and airy summer clothing would be appropriate. If it’s a winter-themed photo session, opt for cosy, layered clothing in soft fabrics. In fact, bringing plenty of layers to add and remove will offer greater versatility throughout your portrait session!

3. Choose comfortable clothing

It’s important to feel comfortable during the photo session, so choose clothing that is both stylish and makes you feel like yourself. Avoid clothing that is too tight or rigid, as it can be distracting in the photos. When you feel happy and at ease, it shows!

4. Avoid bold patterns and logos

Busy patterns and visible logos can take the focus away from your face. Instead, opt for solid colours or light patterns that allow the camera to concentrate on you. Choose flattering colours that play up your eyes and skin tone.

As an exception to this rule, we love when families bring their culture’s traditional dress into a portrait. While the bright colours become the star of the show, it creates a striking effect and demonstrates a family’s proud heritage.

5. Consider each person’s personality

Each family member should be dressed in a way that at least somewhat reflects their individual personality. Allow children to wear something they feel calm and confident in and encourage each person to add their own personal touch to their outfit. A scarf or accessory can do the trick!

Be sure to try on your outfits in advance. Ensure that everything fits well and that everyone feels their best. This will also give your family a chance to make any necessary adjustments or last-minute additions to their looks.

With these tips, you can choose the ideal family photo outfit. The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and radiant during the family portrait session. If you have any questions or want advice to achieve your family photo shoot vision, be sure to get in touch with our team.
